As we climbed the Vessel, its geometry opened up; the tread plates of the steps became longer, making it slightly easier to climb, as if delivering a lesson about the pleasantness of success. Heatherwick, however, was in a period of professional disappointment. Around this time, it was reported that the proposed renovation of David Geffen Hall had been scrapped. And Barry Diller had withdrawn financial support for a new pier, after having tired of legal objections to it. (Later, the project sputtered back to life.)

The redundant-connector method isn’t too difficult, right? Unfortunately, this method for constraining junction points will cost us an arm-and-a-leg in extra connectors. What’s more, those extra connectors are, in fact, redundant. In both cases above, the first connector, once tightened down, will hold the profiles in place. All additional connectors are redundant in that they don’ t prevent the junction from moving any more than the initial connector did. The benefit from using redundant connectors is that we don’t need to find that “sweet spot,” where the profiles exhibit all the geometric relationships we want, before we tighten them down. The redundant connectors force the profiles into the right spot with their geometric properties.
I asked Heatherwick about the way the planned bridge had become known, fairly or not, as a symbol of privilege. He answered by saying, “I never went to school with Boris, or anyone from power.” That is, he underlined the class distance between himself and Johnson, the former mayor, whose style—honed at Eton and Oxford—is that of amused, ruling-class insouciance. Heatherwick continued, “I went to a primary school in Wood Green”—an unglamorous North London neighborhood. “My grandmother was a servant at Windsor Castle. My other grandmother was a German Jewish refugee who fled for her life.”
Apple, for one, flags users of the iPhone X that burn-in is a possibility. Here’s the quote from its support page for the product, its only phone to date with an OLED screen:
So what sets those shiny, industry-standard profiles apart from these budget alternatives? First off, most of our friendly commercial leaders have been in the business for well over a decade, so it’s pretty safe to assume they’ve been chewing on their nails long enough to get a few things right. As a result, they’ve ironed out dozens of use-cases for extrusions and their various interconnects, everything from clean-room grade profiles to “here, hold my coffee.” Rexroth alone has over a hundred various extrusion types and a host of brackets and connectors for just about every possible hooza-ma-whacha-doodle we could possibly throw down on a factory floor. What we get from inventory is convenience.
If you vary your TV viewing habits like most people, however, it won’t be an issue. Even so, caveat emptor. Or as Caesar once said, "Conscientiam autem ardeat sed non anxius" (be aware of burn-in, but not concerned). He was, we hear, a big fan of his iPhone X.
Advanced analytics – The backbone of the system, this is what separates a working program from one that is highly successful and profitable. Business intelligence tools provide the advanced insight needed to identify service requirements early so that intervention can happen with the least interruption to availability. Manufacturers can delve into influencing factors that may impact billing. With the right data, risks can be shared by suppliers and vendors, making the servitization business model more accurate and supportive of long-term growth.
Related successfully pressed city planners. The Shed was turned ninety degrees, to become parallel with Thirtieth Street. In this orientation, it was squeezed for space, so it was partly integrated into the base of a planned seventy-floor luxury residential tower. Diller Scofidio + Renfro, a firm that had never worked on a high-rise, was asked to co-design that tower. A Related spokesperson told me that there was no connection between the Shed’s repositioning and the architectural contract. Nobody at Diller Scofidio + Renfro agreed to be interviewed for this article, but last year Liz Diller, one of the firm’s partners, told a journalist that the eventual arrangement was a “deal with the Devil,” adding, “We never imagined in a million years that we would be doing a commercial tower. But we like to do everything once.” A penthouse in the tower is currently listed at thirty-two million dollars.
Steps in today’s production scenario include designing the production part, designing the equipment and molds to produce a prototype, testing the prototype, revising the prototype and the tooling, and repeating the process. AM eliminates the time and expense for tooling and retooling, moving directly to prototype. Prototype updates can be made in CAD files, allowing companies to quickly make multiple design iterations. According to a Deloitte study (see sidebar below), research has shown that when aerospace and defense (A&D) companies switch from traditional manufacturing to AM, time savings in prototyping range from 43% to 75%. This is important to an industry where backlogs have become the norm.
