He designed a new pier, in a form that suggested a half-built wooden boat, with curved ribs rising more than two hundred feet. With this, the firm secured a commission for a new pier. The ribs were later lost; Diller recently praised Heatherwick’s work but said that the initial design was “impractical” and “couldn’t be built.” The pier evolved into an undulating park standing on flared pilings—a cauldron half submerged in the Hudson.
