Heatherwick attended college in Manchester, and then pursued a graduate degree in furniture design at the Royal College of Art, in London. In the fall of 1993, at the start of his final year, Terence Conran, who founded Habitat, the British furniture chain that popularized a modernist look, and who later founded London’s Design Museum, came to speak to students. Heatherwick introduced himself.
